Athan E. Steinberg and Dan Shotz are currently in discussions to write, showrun, and produce a live-action Power Rangers series for Disney+ and 20th Century Television. According to The Wrap, Hasbro, the owner of the Power Rangers franchise, plans to reinvent the series for a new generation of viewers while still appealing to longtime fans.
Power Rangers was a defining show for many kids in the 1990s, with its iconic teenage heroes and their giant mechs, which could combine to form even larger robots. In 2018, Hasbro acquired Power Rangers and other properties from Saban Properties for $522 million, emphasizing the brand's "tremendous upside potential." Hasbro's CEO, Brian Goldner, expressed excitement about the opportunities for Power Rangers across various platforms, including toys, games, consumer products, and digital media.
This acquisition followed the underwhelming performance of the 2017 Power Rangers movie reboot, which aimed for a darker, more mature tone and was intended to launch a series of sequels. However, the film’s disappointing box office results led to the cancellation of those plans, paving the way for Hasbro to take control of the franchise.
